Zimbabwe - 35, Sri Lanka - 40
One of the ODI records were created on this day, in 2004. But, for a team in its personal experience, it was a record to be forgotten while other team can be glorified about sharing a part in making a history.
On this day, 16 years ago, Zimbabwe faced Sri Lanka, in their home, for a bilateral 5 match ODI series. Having lost the first one with rain affecting the game and the second one with getting bowled out in a low score, they needed to win this 3rd ODI match to stay in contention to seal the series. But, Sri Lanka and fate had other plans.
Sri Lanka won the toss and decided to field first in a nice swinging track, which would help bowlers to scalp wickets. Zimbabwe came in to bat, but for test match fans and upcoming young bowlers, it was an eye candy to watch.
Marvan Attapattu, the captain of Sri Lankan side, used three pacers namely Chaminda Vaas, Dilhara Fernando and Farveez Maharoof(playing his debut ODI match). Zimbabwe team didn't have a much clarity against Sri Lankan team, I repeat Sri Lankan Team. From the start with a poor communication causing a run out, then after losing their second wicket for 18 runs, it was fully a slider. All the three pace bowlers swung the ball on both directions with air supported so well. Chaminda Vaas was so dominant, with Zimbabwe players struggling against his swing and on this day, he claimed his 300th ODI wicket. His pace with his in swinging delivers, particularly one delivery in which, he bowled a good length, off stump line, in swinger, in which Brendan Taylor weren't able to decide whether to hit it or defend it, gets beaten and finds a edge, which Dilshan at short leg ! caught the ball. This shows how effective his bowling would be and also it also shows the brilliance and confidence of the captain Marvan Attapattu, where he placed a short leg in an One Day match, that too during the bowling of pacer, in a quick wicket !!. At the end, so sad, Zimbabwe got all out for just 35 runs ! The Lowest ODI score ever, which was still needed to be beaten. This is the record, which Zimbabwe needed to forget while Sri Lanka can cherish about this moment for years.
On this day, Farveez Maharoof, making his ODI Debut, claimed his first wicket in One Day International. At the end, Chaminda Vaas finished with picking 4 wickets for just 11 runs in bowling 9 out 10 overs, which had 4 maidens in it (just tells us the story of the match). Dilhara Fernando and Farveez Maharoof, with former picking up 2 wickets for 18 runs in 6 overs while the latter picked 3 wickets for 3 runs in 3 overs. Perfect debut for Farveez Maharoof, even though Zimbabwe team is still lower in ranking comparing to Sri Lanka, making a part of history. The highest individual score is 7 runs scored by DD Ebrahim. All got out in single digit respectively.
Then, Sri Lanka chased this target in 9.2 overs with just losing 1 wicket and with 244 balls remaining !!! There isn't must to speak about batting but the bowling and fielding of Sri Lanka, just stole the show, which now current, inexperienced Sri Lankan team can look into it, showing their team's greatness in International Cricket.
