CWC'19 Memories

From today, I have planned to post daily a single match of Cricket World Cup 2019 with respect to On this day segment. Comparing with other 11 World Cup Tournaments, this has been seen as one of the most differing World Cup, with new teams reaching the finals of the tournament and winning their trophy for the first time. Also, this tournament has seen few matches been abandoned due to rain, comparatively more than previous editions. Also, it has seen many unexpected results.

On this day, exactly an year ago, South Africa faced the hosts England at the tournament opener played in Kennington Oval, London. England, as hosts been the favorites to clinch the trophy whereas South Africa were so strong winning few away tours before the World Cup.

South Africa had won the toss and decided to field first. England lost its opener Jonny Bairstow in the first over, by Imran Tahir dismissing him with a beautiful flighted delivery, which straided the batsman picking up the outside edge. He was dismissed for first ball duck. But then, Jason Roy and Joe Root, played cautiously and streched a neat partnership with both scoring half centuries, and reached 100 at the end of 18 overs. On the other hand, South Africa were desperate to pick up the wickets to slow down their run rate. But, after both reaching their fifties, in the 19th over, Phelukwayo struck in his over. He bowled a good bouncer, which Jason Ray tried to hit his for boundary, picked up the leading edge and a good catch was taken at mid off. Jason Roy was dismissed for well made 54. At the successive over, Joe Root was picked by Rabada, again with a bouncer and this time, the catch was taken at Backward Point. But, these two wickets didn't stop the flow of runs for England. Captain Morgan and Ben Stokes, both struck fifties in a run a ball innings, and Stokes particularly after scoring his fifty, took on the bowlers. It was expected that England would score atleast 330-340 as they were in 217/4 at 36 overs, but slowed down in the final runs, making their final score of 311/8. Stokes top scored with 89 runs and at the bowling column Ngidi picked up 3 wickets but no bowler conceeded lest than 6 runs per over, stating the way England have attacked South Africa bowling Lineup.

South African openers Quinton De Cock and Hashim Amla, came into bat. The start was at pure drama, with first De Cock left the field and Aiden Markram replaced him. Then, after a great bouncer from Archer, which came into the helmet grills of Amla, made him to leave the field which resulted in the return of De Cock. South Africa lost its first wicket, at the end of 8th over. Again, the bouncer, and Aiden Markram became the prey for that wicket. He was dismissed for 11 runs. Then, Faf du Plessis came into bat at No.3 Position. Within few minuted, in the alternative over, again the short pitch delivery dismissed Du Plessis and again its Jofra Archer. Then, Rassie Vander Dussen joined De Cock. They both played well stitching a neatly constructed partnership. De Cock, particularly played well, scoring a decent fifty, which showed that the game is on. Particularly the short, he had hit Over the Mid Off for a sixer, was a pure bliss to watch. But, at 23rd over, De Cock was dismissed of a delivery comes towards his legs, which he pulled back, but surprisingly the fielder in the deep fine leg picked him. He was dismissed for 68 runs. This marked, the hopes of South African team, going down. From there, at Rassie Vander Dussen posted a hard fought fifty but at the other end, wickets tumbled and they were all out for mere 207 runs, resulting in the victory of England by 104 runs. At the bowling, it was Jofra Archer, who was spectacular with the ball, where in his 7 overs, he picked 3 wickets for just 27 runs, with a mainden in his bag. Also, Stokes picked up 2 wickets for 12 runs.

Ben Stokes was awarded Man of the Match for his match winning all round performance of 89(79) and 2/12 in 2.5 overs. A nice way to kick start the tournament for England while a day to be forgotten for South Africa.
