Sri Lanka's plan for new cricket stadium
The Sri Lankan Government in association with Sri Lankan Cricket Board, has announced its plan of building a new cricket stadium in Homagama. Already we have seen the opening of world's largest cricket stadium in Ahmedabad, after demolishing its previous stadium capacity, and also the inaugration of new cricket stadium in Salem city. With all sports are on hold, these news might be a fresher to all sports fans, especially cricket. More cricket stadiums, shows the signs of economical growth and increase in public support towards cricket.
Sri Lanka, already having eight international cricket stadiums where two in Colomba, and each in Pallekele, Hambantota, Kandy, Galle, Dambuwa, and Moratuwa. Now, this is the ninth stadium to be constructed in Sri Lanka, which Former Sri Lankan Cricketer Mahela Jayawardene tweeted that "We don't even play enough international cricket or domestic first-class cricket in the existing stadiums we have ... Do we need another one?" stating about the poor usage of stadiums already present in Sri Lankan country.
This will be the second ground in Colombo district with floodlight capacities to host day/night matches. This is said to be the largest stadium in Sri Lanka, to be constructed with 40,000 seating capacity where previously it had stadiums of seating capacities with highest of 35,000. Also, it is allocated for a space of 26 acres. It is said to cost around 30 million USD to 40 million USD and will take atleast 3 years to complete.
My personal opinion is that, construction of more and more stadiums will surely help in the development of cricket. The main problem in Indian country is lack of local grounds, despite having many stadiums in India. The grounds will surely bring up many talents, which will be better for our cricketing future. But, many grounds have been constructed as buildings. Also, it will influence people. The success and craze of Australian cricket lies in the quality of cricket in each and every stadiums in their country.
