Final Match, Consolation Victory
On this day, West Indies faced Afghanistan team at Headingley, Leeds in the 2019 Cricket World Cup. Both of them, are at their last league match, with both haven't qualified for Semi Finals. At one end, West Indies had just won a single game whereas Afghanistan haven't won even a single game. Both teams have been a part of some close encounters, but unfortunately both the teams have ended up as losing side.
West Indies team have won the toss and chose to bat first. This is the final World Cup game for Chris Gayle, who has been a part of the team for more than 19 Years. Also, this World Cup was very poor in terms of scoring. West Indies lost its first wicket, so early in the form of Chris Gayle. He got out of 7 runs off 18 balls, which seemed the way not to get out in his final appearence. But, Shai Hope and Evin Lewis, got the match back on to the track with Lewis blistering some quick runs. Both, were on a fine hitting way before Evin Lewis ramped way back with his poor shot. He got out for 58. Shai Hope played slowly and scored a brisk 77. But, the fact is that, other than Chris Gayle, 5 to 6 batsmen have scored best runs. But, none have converted into 3 digit scores. 3 batsmen have scored 50+ scores. At end, the final score is 311/6. Afghanistan team haven't scored more than 250 in this tournament. But, here, they need to atleast get a convincing win.
Afghanistan openers came into chase. As same as West Indies, Afghanistan had lost its first wicket so early for just 5 runs. Then, Rahmat Shah and Ikram Alikhil had a strong solid partnership. During Previous Matches, Ikram Alikhil was struggling to find form, has found himself on the track with a scintillating show of batting. Both have scored half centuries, with a partnership of 133 runs. At this point, all would have thought that Afghanistan will win the match. But, West Indies had other ideas. Brathwaite scalped the wicket of Rahmat Shah with Chris Gayle claiming the catch. After the catch, the celebration was even more unique. Both started doing pull ups on the ground, as a part of celebration. Even though Chris Gayle hasn't scored runs on his final WC game, these moments will still be in his memory lane forever. After the dismissal of Rahmat Shah, Ikram Alikhil continued his sheer batting. He scored 86 runs, before being dismissed by Chris Gayle. This time, the score was 189/3. Still, the match were at Afghanistan's hands. But, the poor middle order batting, and some calm heads of West Indies, started taking a toll on Afghanistan. Asghar Afghan at one end, trying to score runs whereas at the other end, the middle order fell so short of runs because of some good bowling. Afghan got out for 40 quick runs. From his wicket, the match got out for Afghanistan with making them winless in the tournament. Afghanistan played their quota of 50 overs and got all out of 288 runs. Especially, a catch took by Fabian Allen at the covers, to dismiss the last
wicket were pure athleticism.
Shai Hope was awarded Man of the Match for his top scoring knock of 77.
