2020 ENG vs PAK, 1st Test, Full Match Review

After finishing on Test Series between England and West Indies, an another test series have been announced during the lockdown period, which had commenced on 5th of August. This time, it is the top ranked test nations, England and Pakistan have locked horns, with both having a pretty good record in recent times. The first one of three match series, have been scheduled to play at Emirates Old Trafford cricket stadium, located at Manchester.

Pakistan have won the toss and decided to bat first in a rain affected batting track. Almost 75% of the day 1's game has been affected due to rain. But with the remaining game for the play, Englishmen have dismissed Abid Ali and Pakistani Test Captain, Azhar Ali in quick succession. Whereas on the side of Pakistan, Shan Masood at one end, played slowly, whereas at the other end, the traditional batting of Babar Azam, continued with a good solid half century. Many experts were expecting him to score century on Day 2.

During Day Two, the expectation of many had been drought with dismissing Babar Azam in the first over of the day with a good outswinging delivery bowled by James Anderson. This early breakthrough continued throughout the end of session one of day two, with picking three wickets overall for just 48 runs. But, the silent storm, Shan Masood was in the crease along with Shadab Khan. They both made a good comeback from an early slump. Shan Massod was so effective in his shot making with punishing the balls, which he seemed to be so confident in doing so. Also, he stood like a wall and waited patiently for the bad ball. Whereas Shadab Khan provided a supportive interference at the other end. This partnership created a turning point at Pakistani innings. Shan Masood went to score a century, which remains the first century, scored in the 21st century at England by a Pakistani opener. Also, his knock of 156 ensured Pakistan to reach a total of 326, a pretty good start. Englishmen came into bat. The great bowling from the Pace trio of Naseem Shah, Mohammed Abbas and Shadab Khan, ripped through the England's top order batting lineup. Mohammed Abbas was so perfect in his line and length, bowled so particularly at a pitching zone and gave a good movement. Specifically, the dismissal of Stokes by him, in which he pitched at good length and made the batsman to move forward for a drive, were Stokes fell for him and tried to play a drive straight with starting from middle stump but there Mohammed bowled it hitting the off stump. Only Ollie Pope providing some resistance, with England finishing the day on 90/4.

Day three began well with Ollie Pope scored a brisk half century, along with Jos Butler playing so slowly without engaging in big hits. But, after the fifty of Ollie Pope, he was dismissed quickly following by the flurry of wickets of Chris Woakes and Dom Bess by Yasir Shah, who spun the ball back and forth. Then, Broad played a quick cameo, ensuring England to finish on 219 runs, a lead of 107 runs for Pakistani cricket team. It was very clear that Pakistan would be winning this test match at a good margin, as their batting seemed somewhat great. But, what happened was pure miserable. Englishmen were right on the surge, with dismissing important wickets. The fight shown by England differs what they used to be at normal situation. They swung the ball both directions with making use of slip fielders at perfection. Pakistani batsmen lost mainly due to some sudden incoming deliveries. They were stranded on 137/8, with a lead of 244.

During Day 4, Yasir Shah added some vital runs, with hitting quick boundaries. He scored an important 33 runs of 23 balls, which helped Pakistan to post a target of 277 for England. Pakistani team were all out for 169 runs, very poor. But, still the target seemed to be a tough one to chase. But, as far as English team is concerned they had an additional day of play. England were right from the start with playing some good fine strokes, and at one stage it looked impossible for Pakistan to remove the wickets of Root and Sibley. The day's first session ended with fully on the side of England. What will happen ? is the question and what had occurred is the answer. During the second session, Pakistani team made a strong comeback with dismissing Root, Sibley, Pope and Stokes. Their main middle order batsmen were dismissed so quickly, as Englishmen lacked an additional proper batsman whereas Butler ans Woakes weren't right in their batting form. The game was safely in the hands of Pakistani men. Butler and Woakes started to play aggressive. A counter attacking mindset. They targeted each and every ball with making Pakistani clueless. This continued till the third session where both scoring extraordinary half centuries at one end whereas at the other, Pakistani team were affected much. Azhar Ali, captain of Pakistan, lost all of his three reviews due to tension created by them, and the urge of picking wickets. After both scoring fifties, the pace slowed down and the scoring went bit easier. Pakistan picked up the new ball and snatched two wickets, but it wasn't enough as England won the game by 3 wickets.

A game where it was completely in the hands of Pakistan, losing their way and turned around its head, just in a phase of two sessions. This shows, even a long lasting fight in a game, will surely turn around the fortunes. Chris Woakes was awarded Man of the Match for his half century and also total of 4 wickets.
