2022 ICC Men's T20 World Cup Qualification Process
We already knew that, this year's Men's T20 World Cup has been to postponed to 2021 and 2022 respectively, making it as 2 T20 Cricket World Cups held consecutively in successive years. In these two, 2021 edition is scheduled to take place in India with the same qualification process of 2020. So, what is the news about 2022 T20 Cricket World Cup qualifying process ? This tournament will feature 86 teams in which 15 teams ( excluding hosts Australia ). This tournament has been split into twelve qualifiers across five months with teams like Romania, Hungary and Serbia see themselves in the ICC event for the first time.
Also, Finland will host an ICC event for the first time with Japan hosting ICC T20 World Cup Qualifiers game for first time, and will host this after hosting ICC Men's U-19 Cricket World Cup Qualifiers.
In this 16 team tournament, top twelve ranked teams in the 2021 T20 Cricket World Cup including hosts will directly qualify for the 2022 Cricket World Cup.
So, there is a fight for bottom 4 spots. For the sake of bottom four spots, there are six Qualifiers, in which regions like Africa and Europe, which consists of more number of teams, will have two and three sub Qualifiers respectively.
Sub Regional Africa A
In this Qualifier process, it consists of 7 teams from which the top number one team will qualify for Africa Qualifier. This is scheduled to take place in April 2021
Sub Regional Africa B
Here, it contains 6 teams from which only one, the number one team will qualify for Africa Qualifier. This event is scheduled to take place in April 2021
Africas Qualifier
In this stage, it consists of four teams, in which one from each Sub Regional Africa Qualifiers along with Kenya and Nigeria will be present. From these four, only one team will be qualifying for ICC Men's T20 World Cup Qualifiers Stage. This will take place in November 2021.
East Asian Pacific ( EAP ) Qualifier
This stage consists of eight teams from East Asian Pacific region, from which only one will qualify for Men's T20 World Cup Qualifiers Stage. This is scheduled to take place from 11th - 16th October, 2021
America's Qualifier
There are 8 teams from American continent, from which 2 teams will qualify for the Qualifier stage. This tournament will held during 17th - 23rd July, 2021.
Asia Qualifier A and B
Asia consists of two qualifications, A and B respectively. These two groups consists of six and five teams respectively. From these 11 teams, only the top two ranked teams, one from A and one from B will qualify for Qualifiers Stage. Asia Qualifier A Stage will be held during 3rd to 9th April 2021, while the B Qualifiers will be held during 3rd to 9th July 2021
Sub Regional Europe A, B and C
These three qualifiers consists of teams from Europe region. Each Qualifier consists of eight teams making up 24 teams in total respectively. From these 24 teams, three teams will qualify for Qualifiers Stage, one from A, one from B and one from C.
Sub Regional Europe A Qualifier will be held from 8th - 13th July, 2021. B Qualifier will be held from 30th June - 5th July, 2021 while the C Qualifier will be held from 5th July - 10th July, 2021 respectively
Europe Qualifier
This stage consists of four teams with top three from Sub Regional Europe Qualifier A, B and C whereas the fourth team will be Jersey. Two teams from this stage will qualify to Qualifiers Stage. It is held on 15th - 21st October
ICC Men's T20 World Cup Qualifiers Stage A and B
This will feature sixteen teams, which is split into two groups with eight teams each. Eight teams will be from Regional Qualifiers which I have explained above. Along with those eight teams, there will another set of eight teams in which four will be from the bottom placed teams in the 2021 T20 Cricket World Cup. The next four will be teams which have in the top positions, who have directly qualified to the Qualifier stage, with showing best in their previous Qualifiers. They are Nepal, Singapore, UAE and Zimbabwe respectively. So, in the sixteen teams, top four teams, two from each group will qualify for the 2022 T20 Cricket World Cup. This will be great chances for smaller cricketing nations to see themselves in this mega event
